Fried fish with Potato Peratel and Rasam

Some meals are purely comfort meals..today's lunch is one of my favourite simple hits home kinda meals. Meals like this transport me to the days where I couldn't wait for mummy to finish frying the fish so I could dive into the food!

Fried Fish
This small fish are perfect for frying, they are called selar kuning and are inexpensive. Just marinate for at least an hour with chili powder, turmeric powder, salt and about 3 tablespoons of milk. Deep fry the fish just before serving.

Ikan bilis Potato Peratel
Cube 4 potatoes and cook in the microwave for about 10 minutes and keep aside. Chop 3 medium size onions and 2 green chilies. Pour oil in the frying pan and once the oil is hot add some mustard seeds (about 1 tablespoon) and some curry leaves followed by the onions and green chilies. Stir it and once aromatic add 1 cube of ikan bilis (anchovy) stock cube. After 3 minutes add in the potatoes and continue stirring for 5 minutes. Add 2 tablespoons of chili powder and some turmeric powder. Keep stirring for about 8 minutes before adding salt and some water just to coat the pan and cover to cook for 7 minutes. Before removing from the stove add another sliced green chili and more curry leaves.

Rasam
Pound some cumin and black pepper,a pinch of turmeric powder with 3 cloves of garlic, a small onion and 2 dried chilies coarsely. In a small pot add a tiny bit of oil and add a teaspoon of fenugreek seeds and mustard seeds, once it pops add some curry leaves and the pounded ingredients. Stir for a few minutes before adding a bowl of tamarind water and one quartered tomato. Add half a cup of water and salt to taste and bring it to one boil.

Enjoy the simple spread with some fried pappadums and hot fluffy rice!
